There is so much to see and do at The Outer Banks, that I know it will take several days to even scratch the surface. I centrally locate myself on Roanoke Island, giving me quite a few options for a days outing.  Today, it is lighthouses and there are 5 of them!  I put my gloves on, and start digging towards Cape Hatteras.

Lighthouse #1
 Bodie Island Lighthouse

First stop is the Bodie (pronounced "body") Island Lighthouse.  As is the case with many of these beacons, it is the third such lighthouse claiming its name.  The original, built in 1847 was abandoned due to a poor foundation.  The second, was blown up in 1861 by retreating Confederate troops who feared the Union would use it to their advantage for navigation.  The third, and one you see today was completed in 1872 and stands 150' high.

Lighthouse #2
Cape Hatteras Lighthouse
Oh, I bet you recognize this one, Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, also known as America's Lighthouse.  The iconic black and white spiral striped landmark stands 208 feet and is truly regal.  Like Bodie, this is not the original but the third.

Lighthouse #3
Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse

Uh huh, you guessed it, moles, gophers, ground squirrels and other "dirt tossers" are responsible for the fourth incarnation of the Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse.  See a trend?

Lighthouse #4
Currituck Beach Lighthouse
The Currituck Beach Lighthouse was built to fill the last remaining "dark spot" on North Carolina's coast and the only one open for me to climb to the top.

Honorary Lighthouse #5
Ocracoke Lighthouse

The Ocracoke Lighthouse is North Carolina's oldest operating lighthouse standing 75' tall.  Kitt and I would have to take a ferry to access it and as it's getting late with a storm already brewing, we opt out of the "mud" and head back to camp.

  1. Now that's what I'm talking about, those guys @ the Outer Banks must sure like to fish, and have the rigs to prove it. With those kinda set ups the fishing must be half way decent from time to time just surf casting. Maybe U got a few pics of them in action huh? Can't believe I still haven't been out this year and it doesn't look like I'm going to make it before x-mass either. The "Broom Stick" adventure was as as interesting as I made it, which was quite once I got over MYSELF! Who would have guessed?? At any rate I think I'll try and finish up painting, and reassembling the out drive Gimbel this week. I have also decided to start to try and learn programing --- Hope I can stick with it this time.

    Keep ON juice n

  3. My grandson Mike, fished a lot from the shore there in the Outer Banks. With much success. He even tried it here in San Diego - with less success. But I think it is the fishing itself and not just the catch that lures fishermen to our shores! Loved the photos of the lighthouses- and the spiral staircase! Keep having fun!!! I got out and about today. Even refilled the bird feeder that erupted the last time I put feed in it- with two very fat and healthy mice! Talk about bravery! More pics to send soon. Luv and hugs, aunt judy
