This town just keeps giving! The post Halloween fairy paid a visit last night and I wake up to flower(s) and chocolates.  I told you everyone here is nice!

A few more items to check off my list today, then it's time to keep moving (or they'll count me as a resident in the next census).



Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hill are a wingtip away and I book a reservation for two.  Kitt and I perform our pre-flight check, taxi down Highway 158, apply full throttle, and are airborne for about an hour before gradually making our decent into the Wright Brothers National Memorial Park.   The park is divided into two sections, an indoor's visitors center where you can learn about the Wright brother's lives, and the outdoor "sandbox" where the Wright brothers carried out their hundreds of experiments.  I head to the playground first.  

Of course it is windy here.  The brothers purposefully choose this location for its isolation, high dunes, strong winds and soft landings.

I am standing on Kill Devil Hill where a 60' monument now marks the site where the Wright brothers performed hundreds of glider flights preceding their first powered flight.






Down below and in a field to the north is the location where on December 17, 1903 the Wright brothers performed their first four engine powered flights.

The large granite boulder marks the take off position and the smaller granite markers, the landing positions.
1st attempt: 12 seconds, 120'
2nd attempt: 12 seconds, 175'
3rd attempt: 15 seconds, 200'
4th attempt: 59 seconds, 852'

and why not more attempts that day you ask?  Yep, the plane was caught by a gust of wind, rolled over and was damaged beyond easy repair.

My seat back is now in it's full upright and locked position, my tray table stowed.  Once again we're ready for take off. Next stop; Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
